Steph, Bryan, and Emmett | Family Photos

If you follow along on the blog you should most definitely know Steph by now. You probably know Bryan and Emmett as well. These are some good people and some good friends of ours. Steph is the talent behind Stephanie Mills Photography (http://www.spmillsphotography.com). Once or twice a year we do a quick family session photo exchange with each other.

This one happened to be on an insanely cold and windy December morning. This session lasted about five minutes. Sometimes that’s all you need. We met up at Meshanticut Lake in Cranston since we’re both Cranstonites and true to our Cranston nature we don’t like to drive very far for anything.

I had never shot at Meshanticut before and was pleasantly surprised. The light was pretty sweet since we did it (relatively) early in the morning. Emmett was a bit more cooperative than the kids on our half of the session, though I won’t mention any names (read: Ezra). All’s well that ends well though. We were glad to get a few pictures of our little family and I was happy to get Steph, Bryan, and Emmett some pictures of theirs. Check some out below.

Carolyn and Steve | Sturbridge Village Wedding

Carolyn and Steve gave us our first chance at shooting a wedding at Sturbridge Village. It was our last one of 2014. If you’ve never been to Sturbridge Village you should check it out sometime. It’s like a portal to the past.

We ended up at there wedding because the Carolyn’s sister Sarah was the maid of honor at a wedding we had done in the past (Nikki and Rick’s) and said nice things about us to Carolyn. Thanks Sarah! We love doing weddings for people that are connected to past weddings like that.

Everything took place at Sturbridge Village. Carolyn got ready there and then went off to an ultra simple historic chapel type building on the property via horse drawn carriage. It was like walking into a history book. Never have we had to tiptoe around so carefully at a ceremony before! The floors creaked if you just looked at them.

After the ceremony we did formal photos in the chapel and then took Carolyn and Steve outside for some (cold) bridal portraits. We made sure to get some with the horse drawn carriage as well since that was important to Carolyn. From there we headed back to the main building for the reception and to warm up. The rest of the night went smoothly and I’ll let the pictures tell the story of the wedding. Thanks Carolyn and Steve (and Sarah, too)! All the best to you both!

Maria and Peter | Quidnessett Wedding

Maria and Peter’s Quidnessett wedding was the first time we’d had a chance to go there in the late fall when all the leaves were turning. It gave the place a completely different feel than we were used to. I loved down in the back of the course because all the tall plants were a light brown and made an awesome backdrop for bride and groom photos (check’em out below).

The ceremony and reception were both at Quidnessett. There was such an awesome calm about the ceremony. All the family and friends were gathered in the dimly lit main room. The sky was dark behind the windows that they were standing in front of and it just felt right. We’re really glad Maria and Peter decided to have us at their wedding. Abby showed up with the Bluecube to kick the reception into high gear.

Peter sang the first dance song to Maria and then joined in with her to finish it out and dance with her. It was a little different than what’s typical but it was pretty cool. There were a lot of personal touches like that that really made the wedding their own.

Wishing you both all the best from all of us at Blueflash!

Jess and Chad | East Greenwich Engagement

You may recognize Jess from, well, here. She’s one of our very own lead photographers. Her and her boyfriend Chad had recently gotten engaged. It was a total surprise for Jess. Chad is from Michigan, where Jess is from, so Chad flew into RI and crashed at our place for the night. The next day he went to Block Island and I sent Jess there separately for an engagement shoot with fake clients. When she showed up to meet the clients, there was Chad waiting for her at the bluffs with the ring.

Soon after that Chad headed back to Michigan to get back to his job and life there. When he came back to RI to visit we got together to do an engagement session of the two of them. We went to East Greenwich because Jess loves the area and we walked the streets and shot whatever looked good.

I have to admit – it’s intimidating to shoot another photographer. It was fun though and I was glad I had the chance to do it. The bittersweet part to this whole engagement thing is that Jess is leaving us in the fall to go back to Michigan, get married, and continue their life together there. I’m still working on convincing her to stay in RI but I’m pretty sure I’m losing that battle.

Check out some highlights from the session below…

Susan and Ben | Towers Wedding

We love ourselves a good early morning start. Most of the time. It’s worth it when your day starts out with the view you can see in the first photo below. It also helps when there’s good people on the other end getting ready for their wedding day. That was the case for us with Susan and Ben’s Towers wedding.

It was a 7AM start time at the Towers. They had a day wedding (brunch for the win) and in order to be ready for a 10:30AM ceremony you’ve got to start early. Dan, Emily and I got to the Towers at about ten of seven and saw the sun start to peek its head across the Atlantic horizon. Not bad.

Everything went pretty much according to plan with the girls. The guys showed up at about quarter to nine and we hung out with them for a bit to get some photos and video. The Towers looked great for the ceremony at that time of day. Light flooded in through the windows all along the whole venue. I don’t think I took my flash out of my case the entire wedding which was a nice change of pace.

The rest of the reception was classy and relaxed. Day weddings have a totally different feel than night weddings. It’s really interesting to experience the difference. When the day was getting close to the end we jumped in the car and drove down the street with Ben and Susan to get some more photos and video of the two of them together. They put their handwritten vows in a bottle and threw them into the Atlantic, the start of an annual tradition for them. It was, umm, in a biodegradable bottle…

Check out their wedding film and highlights below. Congrats to the both of them as they start their new life together!

RI Monthly | Top Lawyers 2014

RI Monthly hosted their Top Lawyers event at the Inskip Mercedes dealership in Warwick, RI. We were there to capture the photos and make a recap video for them as we are at all their events. These are always fun because Dan and I get to pretend like we’re making a car commercial.

Fireworks catering was there to keep everyone fed and Monty and his jazz trio kept everyone entertained. As usual we went from candid mode at the beginning of the event into formal portraits in front of the step and repeat background with the award winners. Give’em a look and be sure to check out the video!

Alita and Will | Towers Wedding

We loved working with Alita and Will at their Towers wedding. They were so easygoing, had a good sense of humor, and were just generally good people. They loved each other and were excited to be getting married and it showed.

Alita and her girls got ready at the Hampton Inn. That’s also where the guys ended up and where they had their first look. There was a big grassy area in the back of the property lined with trees that looked pretty cool. Alita sported her red Toms throughout the event and Will had some equally bold red Supras.

We were able to get a good variety of photos with Narragansett beach a few steps away and a little rock jut-out down the street from the Towers. Check out the sweet night time shots out on the balcony. I’m loving how those came out with the lights and ocean in the background.

Thanks so much to Alita and Will for having us be a part of their wedding. We wish you guys all the best with everything!

Jen and John | Newport Engagement

It was a windy day in Newport. No, that’s an understatement. It was nearly a hurricane in Newport. That didn’t deter Jen and John from being all smiles. We had a great session together around town. We may or may not have taken a little mid-session break in the Newport Starbucks to get some blood back in our hands. I couldn’t feel the shutter button after awhile.

Jen and John are from California and were only in town for a little bit. I felt a little bad that they came from warm California to hang out in blustery cold Newport, but they seemed to be in good spirits.

Take a look at some highlights from their session below!

Angelica and Andrew | Biltmore Wedding

Angelica and Andrew’s Biltmore wedding took place last fall in Providence, Rhode Island. It was an elegant event that showcased the love between the two of them. We were able to get some really nice photographs on the Brown campus with the bridal party and Angelica and Andrew. Definitely check out some of those images below.

The day’s schedule was a little different for this wedding. We were there for the getting ready, the ceremony (of course), portraits, and the beginning of the reception. What was different, however, was that we weren’t around for the dancing portion of the ceremony. We started in early on the day and were done by dinner.

I didn’t know how that was going to turn out. I thought there might be a glaring hole in the gallery collection afterwards because we didn’t get a chance to capture the dancing. After we edited the photos and delivered them to Angelica and Andrew I realized that I really liked the feel of it all. It was classy. It was elegant. It was different. It also helped that there was a big group dance during the introductions before dinner.

Most importantly, Angelica and Andrew are off to start their new life together and we wish them all the best. Check out some highlights from their day below, including their wedding film!

Dana and Scott | Providence Engagement

Dana is a long time friend of one of my long time friends which is how we ended up connecting. I’m glad we did, because Dana and Scott are an awesome down to earth couple that were really great to hang out with, talk with, and photograph. They were game for an early morning Providence engagement session. The city was still quiet when we got together. Almost every street parking spot was available. And it was cold. It never seems to be too warm before the sun comes up for some reason.

We met up on Benefit Street and made our way around that area of the city. At Prospect Park we did a little fence jumping and took some pictures overlooking the city from the statue’s point of view. We even got to pop up a light and umbrella over there to add some drama to the lighting. It was early enough that nobody told us to get out.

Very much looking forward to their wedding at the end of September this year. Keep an eye out for their wedding photos when it’s time! Here’s some highlights from their session:
