Danielle and Rich | Whispering Pines Wedding

Danielle and Rich had the quintessential fall wedding at Whispering Pines. The colors were all over the trees because the wedding landed at just the right time. She nailed it with the flowers which were handmade by Danielle herself. She actually used wheat from their family farm in the midwest to create them. I thought that was pretty cool.

Whispering Pines is an awesome outdoor venue. It was our first time there and luckily we got to make their wedding film and take their photographs. The land it’s on goes forever and we took a drive for some photos off the beaten path a bit.

Dancing was out on the back porch and the dinner part of the reception was in the building (that the back porch was attached to). The night capped off with a fireside chat for the remaining guests complete with marshmallow roasting. Danielle is an avid scrapbooker so I hope what we provided to them will keep her busy creating all sorts of books for their wedding! Congrats to them both!

Salvatore Mancini | Celebration of Age

We ended up at this event in such a strange way. I had an idea kicking around in my head for about a half of a year where I wanted to partner up with a senior home of some type and bring our studio gear to their place and do portraits of all the residents. I wanted to do it as personal work – just a project that I thought would be good for the community.

I had contacted a few places but strangely enough couldn’t find any takers. I was surprised, since I wasn’t asking for anything in return. I got discouraged and pretty much gave up on the idea. After some time passed my buddy Steph (of Stephanie Mills Photography) shot me a message asking if I wanted to do some portraits for the Salvatore Mancini Center’s Celebration of Age event. She wasn’t able to do it due to other obligations and once I found out what it was I was totally game for it.

It’s an event that they have every year to honor anybody in the community over the age of ninety. They come and bring a family member and they serve them lunch, have some entertainment, and play some games. They also get a portrait of themselves on the way in (which is where I come in). I was pumped. I enlisted the help of my good friend Breanna to assist for the shoot and we lugged the studio gear to the center. We set up shop in the lobby and next thing we knew the seniors were coming through the door and sitting for their photo.

It was fun. It was interesting. It was humbling. These people have lived so many years and experienced so much in their lifetime. They’ve gone through so much, many of them experiencing extremely hard times and also some of life’s most exciting highs. A lot of them were great to interact with, many of them still sharp as when they were twenty.

We used a grey seamless backdrop, a white reflector camera left, a gridded speedlight on the background pointing up, and the key light was a socked 22″ white beauty dish with an Einstein making the light for us. I’m really happy with the look of the shots. If we had some more room they would have come out a touch better. We weren’t able to separate the subjects from the background as much as I would have liked. Consequently the key light was spilling onto the backdrop a bit.

Technical imperfections aside, I’m happy with and proud of this collection of photos. I hope they mean a lot to the families that received them (we provided a complimentary 5×7 to each attendee) for a lot of years to come. Check out the images. Every face tells a story. Thanks for letting us be a part of your event, and hopefully we can do it again next year!

Emily and Tim | Glen Manor Wedding

I love a good bridal party. When they know how to have fun, joke around, and just be good people then it makes for an awesome wedding for us. Emily and Tim picked some good people for their bridal party and it made for a really fun day and night.

The forecast called for rain and the girls were prepared. Umbrellas and tall green boots made their debut for some of the photos (even though the rain held off). Everything happened at the Glen, including the getting ready for the girls. The room had great light pouring in through big windows.

The Glen Manor is always a pleasure to shoot at. I love the dock out back and the stone texture of the building itself is really photogenic for a back drop. The temptation for a lot of people I think is to run straight to the gardens, but in my opinion there are a lot of better locations on the property that don’t immediately stick out to you.

The Bluecube was there as well to keep the party going late into the night. I like where it goes at the Glen – out on the back patio. It’s nice in the summer time because it’s outdoors but still covered by an overhang. Gives it a cool feel.

All the best to Emily and Tim in their new marriage. Thanks for choosing Blueflash!

Christiana and Josh | Proposal

Emily had the awesome opportunity to photograph an engagement in action. Bonus points because Christiana (the girl getting engaged) is one of Emily’s good friends. I’m going to let her tell you about this one, then don’t miss the pictures following! Take it away, Emily…

-Matt

Last summer, I was a teary eyed spectator standing only a few steps off as my two very dear friends, Josh and Christiana, got engaged. And in the glow of probably the grandest sunset the world has ever seen, I thought to myself, we have dreamed of this forever.

Christie and I have been friends since the start. We daydreamed together of the magic of meeting someone, falling in love, getting engaged- everything you’re supposed to dream about with your best friend. Somewhere along the way, I did watch Christie meet her someone, and I then happily watched as she fell in love with him just as I always hoped she would. However, never did I think for a second I’d get to experience the proposal part of the dream with her. Yet there I stood trying to take these pictures, trying to hold back my happiest tears, as she said yes to the guy who I know will love her fiercely and forever as she deserves.

This was one of the best nights of my life. No, it wasn’t my night, but for some beautiful reason I had the privilege of watching and capturing my friend have the greatest night of her life, and those kind of moments are nothing short of magical.

-Emily

Anias | RI Newborn

Last time you saw Karissa, Stan, and Zekiah was in their maternity photos. Well, the thing that usually happens after maternity photos is that a baby gets born. That’s what happened with Anias, the newest addition to their family.

We went over to hang out with them all (if you missed any other post about them, they’re good friends of ours) and take some pictures of Anias and all of them together. Nothing fancy, just some photos so they’d have some and avoid second child syndrome. That’s when you have a thousand photos of your first child and one of your second child.

Baby photos are not our forte, but there’s some below for you to check out. Congrats on the new baby!

Kristina and Nick | Regatta Place Wedding

Kristina and Nick’s Regatta Place wedding was as picturesque as they get. Perfect temperature, a sunset throwing colors all over everything, a light breeze blowing across the water, and a party that went deep into the night.

The guys arrived by boat to Regatta Place and the girls arrived the traditional way in land vehicles known as cars. It made for some cool video and photos (we got to do both for them). The ceremony and reception were both at Regatta Place. Later in the night there was gelato being served right outside the tent which was a nice bonus.

It was fun working with a lively bridal party (and couple) and I think it was an all around good time for everyone. Check out some of the highlight photos below and definitely their wedding video. Congrats to Nick and Kristina and thanks for having us!

Kayla and Michael | Bittersweet Farms Wedding

Kayla and Mike win the award for the couple that lives the furthest from Rhode Island. These guys came in all the way from Australia (as did some of their guests) to get married at Bittersweet Farm up in Massachusetts. If you’re wondering why the globe crossing trip for their wedding, it’s because Kayla was originally from the MA area but has since moved to Australia.

I think they also hold the record as having the funniest bridal party, specifically the groomsmen. It was a genuine pleasure to hang out and watch them throughout the night have a great time and tell funny stories. Mike and his two groomsmen were lifelong friends and it was really cool to watch.

Everything was at Bittersweet except for the getting ready which took place at the Biltmore. We did some photos of the two of them at the Biltmore before the ceremony but without seeing each other. I liked that and thought the photos were pretty cool.

We caught some really sweet light at a great location at Bittersweet for some of the bride and groom photos. Make sure to check’em out below along with their wedding film. Congrats to the both of them and we wish them all the best back in their home in Australia! Thanks for having us!

Courtney and Chuck | Omni Wedding

We were recently able to be a part of Courtney and Chuck’s Omni wedding in Providence. You might remember them from their engagement session. Courtney also runs the blog “The Blogtini” and is a featured write for “Aisle Say”, RI Monthly’s series of real brides writing about their planning and wedding experiences. We had the opportunity to photograph it and provide uplighting (you do know we offer uplighting, right?) in the grand ballroom of the Omni. That place is massive and definitely deserves the word ‘grand’ in front of it.

They got ready at the Omni and from there went to their ceremony at St. Mary’s church in Bristol, RI. Once they were hitched we headed right back to the Omni and got busy taking photos anywhere in the place that looked good. The party started soon after that. We flipped the uplights on, lit up the place, and the wedding party was announced by Luke of LRE.

The rest of the night went off without a hitch and the party was still going strong when it was time for us to pack up and head out. People danced all night and everyone seemed to have a great time. As for Courtney and Chuck… They had a one week delay before they went away on their honeymoon so I went a little crazy and got all of their photos done by the following Tuesday and had them over Thursday night for a Blue Review. How’s that for prompt service?

It was pretty awesome having them come by so soon and before they went away. We had a great time going through all of their photos, showing them everything, and helping them pick out the perfect albums.

All the best to Courtney and Chuck with their new marriage. Congrats guys!

RI Monthly | Top Designers 2014

As part of our continuing stint as the official RI Monthly photographer and cinematographer, we documented the 2014 Top Designers event held at the RI Design Center (part of Cardi’s). It was a fitting place to host it.

We were able to shoot some candids as well as the group photos in front of the step and repeat background and also create a highlight video to recap the event. You can see both below:

Nicole and Adam | Wedding Redux

After Nicole and Adam’s wedding was wrapped up I received an email from Nicole asking if we could head into Newport on another day and take more photos. I hadn’t even gotten their wedding photos back to them at that point! She said they had a great time taking pictures and wanted to be able to do some more in their dress and tux. She called it a ‘wedding redux’. I liked the name and I liked the idea so I was more than happy to set it up with them.

We met up in Newport early one morning and took our time shooting wherever we felt like it. There were some people who passed by and wished the congratulations thinking it was their wedding day which was pretty funny. It was really enjoyable to be able to take bride and groom formals without any time pressure from the wedding day. I think this needs to become a thing. Wedding Redux Sessions. Anybody?

It was a lot of fun and I’m glad she reached out to ask about it. Below are some photos we got from the session. Nicole and Adam, part 2!
