Editing. It takes up so. much. time. Part of us likes it, but the bigger part of us wants to be working on bigger and longer term things for our business. As business owners we are the visionary, the planner, the strategist. If we’re spending the majority of our time editing thousands of photos, who’s doing those other things? Nobody.
Outsourcing is an option but most services are impersonal, national (or international), opaque, and hit or miss.
There are some good ones out there (i.e. The Image Salon) where you can work with a personal editor, but the cost is very high and you still don’t actually know the people. The low cost services (ShootDotEdit, Fotofafa, Lavalu, etc…) have inconsistent results because you get assigned to whatever editor they have sitting around and they process insane volumes of photos.
Imagine an outsourcing service where you actually know the people? They live 20 minutes away from you and are wedding photographers themselves that totally get your needs. Bonus that they’re familiar with all the venues that your photos are from.
I had a really hard time letting my editing go to somebody else at first. I tried all the aforementioned services and was frustrated with all the time I had to spend going through and checking what they did. When I started letting my own staff edit my weddings that’s when my world got turned upside down in a good way.
They made extra money, I got time back, I was able to directly communicate refinements and everybody was happy – including our clients most importantly.
We have excellent editors on staff already who have capacity to do more than just our own weddings. I’m thinking it’s time we open up that capacity to everyone else. We don’t want to go national like ShootDotEdit, but rather provide editing services for our fellow RI photographers.
Could you benefit from some more time in your life to tackle the longer term strategic tasks? Or maybe just to spend more time with family and friends. Or sleep – remember that?
