Whose photo rights are they, anyway? There are two main wedding photography business models.
Your Photos Held For Ransom
One model is where the photographer retains all the photo rights to the images. Everytime you want a print or any other photo product you must go through the photographer and order it… and pay for it at whatever price they’re asking. This type of business model geenerally offers a lower up-front cost, but ends up costing more in the long run and makes the whole experience a bit frustrating.
You Paid For the Photo Rights, You Own Them
The second model is when part of the deliverable after the wedding from your photographer are the final image files. Once you have the files, you are able to print them at will, share them wherever you’d like, and basically just enjoy your investment. This is what having the photo rights means. The cost of this type of business model is generally a bit higher than the previous way, but there are no future costs involved. This usually ends up being a more affordable long-term solution. It’s also less adverserial, easier, and a better experience.
Guess What We Do
You probably already guessed how we do th ings at Blueflash from the descriptions above. We give our brides and grooms the photo rights. We believe that you invested in the photography and you deserve to be able to use it, enjoy it, share it, and own it.
Be On the Lookout
As you look around, be sure you understand what you’re getting into and how the arrangement will be after the wedding. Just being able to view your files online is not the same as actually having the files and having the rights to use them. Know what you’re investing in before you sign.
