Guest Post | Wedding Etiquette in the Age of Social Media
May 12, 2016 By  Britt Kosiba With  0 Comment
In  Bride Tips  /  Guest Post  /  Weddings

Sharing your wedding on social media is a fun way to celebrate your big day, but how you do it can become inappropriate. To keep it fun and make social media beneficial to your wedding, follow these dos and don’t’s.

DO Use it to Connect with Guests

The great thing about using social media for your wedding is that it can bring you closer to your guests before the big day. Set up a wedding profile page, such as on Facebook, where your guests can chat with you as well as learn important information they need to know about your big day. By using social media to connect with your guests, you make it easier to reach them all in one place.

DO Build Anticipation for Your Big Day

Planning your wedding is exciting and social media gives you the opportunity to include your guests in that excitement. You might be so thrilled with your stunning diamond wedding ring design or gorgeous reception hall that you can’t wait to take a photo and upload it to your page. This is a fun way to feel as though your loved ones are with you every step of your wedding planning – and seeing snippets of what they can expect from your wedding will make them look forward to it.

DO Set Up a Wedding Hashtag

Creating your own wedding hashtag with your partner is good for many reasons. First, you have all your wedding-related tweets, images, and messages in one place. It’s also lovely for your guests to get involved in sharing their thoughts or personal messages with you. After the wedding, you can search for your wedding hashtag on social media and enjoy all that’s been written about your big day. It’s like having a virtual wedding guestbook with messages from loved ones you can cherish forever.

DON’T Let It Take Over

You want to share important wedding moments as they happen, but don’t let social media take things too far. An example is with images your guests might want to take and upload to your social media wedding page. Although this can be fun, you might feel concerned over the quality of images that will end up on the internet, so perhaps it’s good to set some rules for this type of photo sharing. Examples include asking guests not to share personal images on your wedding page. Perhaps they could upload them to an album instead that you can edit before sharing with the world. Leave the photography to a professional to ensure high-quality snaps.

Although it’s become trendy for couples to share their marital status online the second they’re pronounced man and wife, having such an obsession with social media pulls you away from making real-life memories that can’t be photographed. Don’t miss them! Social media is a fun way to connect with guests and share your special day with the world, but it needs to be regulated a bit so that you don’t fall into the trap of letting it become too much of a priority. Follow the above tips to make social media enhance – not distract you from – your once-in-a-lifetime wedding.

It's always humbling and an honor when a fellow photographer trusts you to photograph their own wedding.

These two were awesome tonight. They were kind and easygoing and deserved every bit of sunlight they got today after this morning's downpours.

Congrats to you both and thank you again for having us be a part of it!
